As we head into 2019 (or insert the forthcoming year) it is inevitable that the infamous “new year resolutions” will come into full effect.
These proclamations are always made, but the true problem is that they are rarely ever kept.
I’ve heard from many people from all walks of life over the years. Many of them proclaim that the upcoming year will finally be the year they lose weight, drop body fat, or improve their physique.
Unfortunately, it almost never happens because talk is cheap.
Many folks get caught up in the rapture of the resolution and start to make wild claims.
But without having an actual plan to achieve these goals they will remain nothing more than just wild claims.
I’ve been that guy before, and it took me looking hard in the mirror and accepting responsibility for me to change.
In terms of how to keep New Year fitness resolutions there are 3 things you must do:
1) Have A Plan Of Action With Specific Goals
You say you want to get in shape, but what does that actually mean?
Setting broad goals like “I want to get in shape” creates no accountability.
Having specific goals like “I want to lose 4 inches off my waist” or “I want to run 11.5 in the 100 meter dash” creates accountability and purpose with what you want to do.
List 1-3 things you want to accomplish with your training and nutrition and be specific about it.
2) Don’t Broadcast Your Plans All Over The World
Many folks cannot keep anything to themselves let alone plans, goals, and new year fitness resolutions.
They go tell anyone with ears about what they are about to do. As time goes on, and it becomes evident that they are nowhere near their goal they end up looking bad.
Their word loses value because they never keep true to what they said they were going to do. Having a hollow word reduces folks belief in you to zero.
I was this person many years ago when I would make the claim to anyone that would listen that “I was going to open a gym.”
On the surface it sounded good, but I had no LEGIT plan on how to get it done.
It got so bad that I stopped talking about opening a gym from 2013-2016.
I was embarrassed because my hollow claims were resulting in no action.
People would ask me about the gym and I would have no progress report.
I knew I wanted to open a gym and in those years that I stopped talking about it publicly, I was able to formulate a plan on how to actually accomplish it.
Once the plan was designed, executing it was easy.
Write your goals down and only share them with a small, select group of people if you are going to share them at all.
Tony Talkers spend so much time talking yak that they never spend any time actually getting closer to attaining their goal.
Success moves in silence.
3) Do It
If you make a claim today, you better make it a happen.
There can be no more lame excuses about why you cannot get it done.
Almost anything is possible if you put a high priority on it.
3 weeks ago, I had never made a steak in my life. I have been a chicken, turkey, and fish man for the vast majority of my time on Earth.
I decided I wanted to learn how to make steak and I put a high priority on it.
There were no bold proclamations that I made about bout making steak. I have just been consistently reading about steak and cooking steak.
My first steak was average at best and a rubber boot at worst but now I’m making steak that is of a high quality.
I’m not the master of the steak game, but my skills are improving at a great rate.
Why? Because it is a priority.
If you are a weak athlete who wants to be strong, put a priority on it.
Perhaps you are overweight and want to lose body fat. Time to put a priority on it.
Maybe you are skinny and want to build muscle mass and get bigger. Time to put a priority on it.
If you are a slow sprinter and want to be fast, put a priority on it.
If you are unhappy with how you look and you want to build an amazing physique, put a priority on it.
You have to put your priorities above things like endless time on social media, TV, hanging out at bars getting wasted, and excessive shopping.
I can promise you that once you begin to prioritize what you want, you will actually begin to see the fruits of your labor.
If your health and fitness remains toward the bottom of your priority list then you can expect to have the same or even worse complaints and issues with your body and performance at this time next year.
Conclusion
The time to unleash your inner greatness is now.
Actions will always speak louder than hollow new year fitness resolutions. You just have to take that action to make your goals a reality.
Have a happy and safe New Year celebration.
