When the new year begins, most people are highly motivated to make changes to their health. But if you don’t have any structure to go with that motivation, you’ll be going nowhere fast. This is exactly why structure beats motivation in fitness.
Most people don’t fail because they lack effort. Most people fail because their effort has no direction.
The Power Of Structure
A structured training program demands that you be accountable in the gym. You can’t just skip training because you don’t “feel” like it. You’ve got to be there or the logbook and your weak performances will expose you. If you bench 135lbs for 3 sets of 5 reps on day 1 and then bench 135lbs for 3 x 5 on day 90, you’ve done nothing except waste your time.
When you have a structured nutrition program you are forced to be consistent with your diet. Are you not losing any weight from week to week? If you were 200lbs on day 1 and 200lbs on day 90, what progress have you made on your weight loss journey? ZERO.
And a structured recovery protocol demands for you to put a priority on sleep and stress management. Are your training sessions sluggish? Are you stressed out most of your day? If you are sleeping 4 or 5 hours a night and hopped up on excessive caffeine, your body will betray you. If you are not making progress, your recovery is lousy.
Brick By Brick
It’s not possible to reach your goals overnight. But it is possible to get a little better every time you show up at the gym.
Adding 1 more pound on the bar will be 100lbs more pounds before you know it. Shaving 1 tenth of a second off your 40 yard dash will eventually become 3 tenths of a second faster. Jumping 1 inch higher on the vertical jump will become 10 inches higher over time. And losing 1 more pound on the scale will become 30lbs over the next year.
Take a look at the pyramids in Egypt. I’ve been there before. And as magnificent as they are, they started as one brick. We all start as one brick in this iron game. But with consistency, structure, and discipline, you have the ability to build your body into your own personal, magnificent pyramid as well.
The Last Rep
Motivation can get you started. But only structure will get you across the finish line when the motivation tank eventually runs out. That’s the reality of why structure beats motivation in fitness.
