A lot of people will never get to where they want to be because they spend most of their time complaining about where they are. The reality is simple: complaining gets you nowhere, and until you stop, you’ll never move forward.
Complaining Gets You Nowhere
In the fitness game, complaining is more common than humid days during the Philadelphia summer. Some of the classic complaints are:
“I’m so fat but I don’t want to train today because it’s too hot outside.”
“I’m so skinny but I don’t want to squat today because it’s too cold outside.”
“I’m so weak but I don’t want to lift today because the Eagles game is on TV.”
My question is simple: Why in the blue sky did you even show up if all you came to do was complain and make excuses?
I don’t like cold weather, but I dislike the feeling of being out of shape a whole lot more. And last time I checked, the gym is inside. As a businessman, gym owner, and barbershop owner most days are long days. But a long day won’t stop me from working hard.
I like watching the Eagles too. But not more than I love being healthy, fit, and strong. If you’re serious about making big-time gains with your physique, your health, or even opening your own business, you cannot afford to become a chronic, do-nothing complainer.
Fake Hustle At Its Finest
Plenty of athletes, lifters, and everyday people are unhappy with their progress.
They’ve been in the gym for years but have nothing to show for it in terms of strength, muscle, or performance. Instead of taking specific action to fix the problem, they keep complaining about being too weak or out of shape. As the years pass, the only thing that increases is their frustration.
Complaining without taking action is fake hustle at its finest. Complainers are like people stuck on a treadmill: moving but going absolutely nowhere fast.
My Own Wake-Up Call
I can say this because I used to be a complainer and a loser.
But the day I stopped complaining and started showing up with consistency and discipline was the day my life changed. That’s how I went from a naturally skinny kid to a pro natural bodybuilder. That’s how I went from a bottom of the barrel competitor to NGA Mr. Natural Philadelphia champion and USATF masters sprinter. That’s how I honed my skill sets and became the owner of two businesses.
I didn’t get here because of genetics or a silver spoon. I got here because I refused to quit. You can get there too. But you’ve got to take action starting today. Once you start and begin to see results, momentum builds. And when it builds, you become unstoppable like an avalanche.
3 Steps To Success
If you’re tired of complaining, here’s how you flip the switch:
1) Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself
Catch every complaint before it leaves your mouth. If you hear yourself blaming the weather, your genetics, or your schedule, stop and replace it with a plan of action.
2) Take Immediate Action
Don’t wait until Monday, the New Year, or “when life calms down.” Start today. Lift the weights, eat the right meal, go to sleep earlier, or practice your craft. Small consistent actions beat big empty excuses.
3) Stay Relentless
Progress is built through discipline and consistency, not luck. Commit to showing up even on the days you don’t feel like it. Momentum grows every time you put in the work.
The Last Rep
Complaining gets you nowhere. Action gets you results.
I made the choice to stop complaining years ago and now it’s your turn. Winners find a way. Losers find excuses.
I’ll holla at you next time.
