The great Michael Jackson once told us to look at the Man in the Mirror. Taking responsibility and accepting blame for your actions will allow you to grow from your experience. It is very enlightening.
Unfortunately, in life and in fitness, the majority of people tend to not look at the person in the Mirror.
The majority look for the easiest path of resistance which is to blame someone or something else for their own shortcomings or failures. When you constantly blame others and deflect responsibility from yourself you do not grow or mature as a person.
Let’s say you are 40 years old and completely out of shape.
You have high blood pressure.
You have abused sugar and now are a grade A candidate to develop diabetes.
You are totally overweight and your confidence is shot like a punch-drunk fighter.
But your state of mind is one of false pride and utter delusion.
You blame your kids for your weight gain.
You blame your spouse for your high blood pressure.
You blame your job for your high stress and not being able to work out.
You even blame the Golden Arches for you developing “the sugar.”
The truth of the matter is that you need to look at the person in the Mirror.
We are responsible for all of our decisions. We have the control and the free will to make choices that will either positively or negatively affect our lives.
You say your kids made you gain weight.
Did they make the choice to pull into the drive thru every night and order a double cheeseburger with everything?
Did they tell you to bring home a 24-pack of brews home every weekend?
Who made the choice to overeat and drink every week? The Man in the Mirror.
You say your job made you stressed out and not able to go to the gym.
Don’t you know that you could perform 20-30 minute intense workouts at your home 3x a week and be in above average shape?
Who made the decision and made lame excuses to not work out and become flabby and sick? The Man in the Mirror.
You say the Golden Arches made you develop diabetes.
Did you not make the choice to supersize that soda and get a dessert each and every time you went there for lunch? Who made the decision to live in Carb City every day? The Man in the Mirror.
The bottom line is this. When you want answers as far as to why you are not where you want to be then it is time look in the Mirror.
Nobody made you do anything. YOU are responsible.
When I was broke and struggling to gain clients as a new personal trainer in 2008 it was not because of the gym. It was because I was not taking the initiative to maximize my training talents.
When I was going nowhere fast 5 years into my strength and conditioning career it was not because of the fitness directors or the owners of the gyms where I used to work. It was because I was not applying myself to become successful.
Once I looked at the Man in the Mirror I was able to come to terms that I was not putting in the effort to be great. I did not deserve the success I wanted.
This fantastic moment of truth allowed me to overcome the hurdles that I was putting in front of myself. These were life-changing moments.
After these realizations, I applied myself and was able to build a consistent clientele and gain prestige in the industry. This allowed me to grow into the friendly, neighborhood strength coach you now know me as.
When you can own up to and accept responsibility for your actions you will be able to rectify the situation and move forward.
Look at the Man in the Mirror today and own up to your decisions and I promise you it will change your outlook.
Remember it is never too late. If you have been a total sloth for 10 years today is the day you could take a walk around the block. It is a small step but still a step in the right direction.
If you have been living in Carb City today is the day where you can begin to make better food choices.
A total transformation will not happen overnight but in time it will. Look at the Man in the Mirror, accept responsibility, and begin to make positive changes today!
Trust me, the mirror will tell you everything you need to know about yourself…
